Milwaukee M18 Battery Not Charging Flashing Red Green

Last Tuesday at noon, my crew was hanging drywall on Level 4 when the M18 suddenly died in the middle of a ceiling grid. The charger flashed red and green like a broken traffic signal while I stood there holding a forty-pound sheet of gypsum board. Three guys stopped dead because that light combination means one thing: the battery isn’t accepting power, or it’s completely dead inside.

Even with perfect maintenance, lithium-ion cells degrade over time due to charge cycles and calendar aging. If your pack has seen hundreds of full discharge-recharge loops, the capacity drops below the threshold required for efficient charging. The internal resistance increases, causing voltage spikes that trigger the protection circuitry mentioned earlier.

A healthy M18 battery should hold a charge for at least two weeks in standby mode without significant drain. If it dies within days while stored on a shelf, the cells are likely compromised. This is common after exposure to moisture or physical impact during transport. The Milwaukee 2904-22 kit offers a five-year warranty, but this covers defects, not normal wear and tear from age.

When replacing a pack, avoid generic third-party replacements that claim compatibility without certification. These often lack the proper communication chips required for REDLINK integration. You lose the safety features that prevent overheating during high-torque tasks like driving 3/8-inch lag bolts all day long.

Bottom line: Age kills capacity. If the battery is older than two years and shows these symptoms, replacement is usually cheaper than repair attempts.
