While the IRC serves as the model code, local jurisdictions often amend these requirements based on climate, seismic activity, or historical precedent. In California, for example, the California Building Code (CBC) aligns closely with IRC but may have stricter guard height requirements for commercial-adjacent residential zones. Florida requires corrosion-resistant materials due to salt air, which impacts the choice of railing metal and coating thickness.

Always verify local amendments before purchasing materials. A common mistake is buying a railing system that meets national code but fails a city-specific inspection because the municipality adopted a 2015 version while you are building in 2026. Check your county planning department website for the latest adopted code edition.
