On a commercial grading job in 2026, relying on satellite data without understanding the variables behind that connection is like driving blindfolded over rough terrain. You might think it’s just a software glitch or a dead battery, but the reality often involves physical obstructions, radio frequency interference, or hardware aging that leaves your operator guessing while the sun comes up. This isn’t about fixing a button; it’s about understanding why the sky stops talking to your machine and what you do when it happens.
Even with perfect weather, your hardware has a lifespan. The antenna dome that sits atop your receiver is designed to protect the internal circuitry from rain and dust, but over time, it cracks or delaminates. If moisture gets inside the housing, corrosion builds up on the delicate PCB traces connecting the antenna feed to the main processor. This results in intermittent signal loss that worsens as humidity rises during early morning grading runs.
Many operators replace their entire grade control unit when this happens, but a simple inspection of the dome seal often solves it. Look for hairline cracks around the base where the dome meets the housing. Even a small gap allows moisture ingress, which eventually kills the signal chain.
